Presentation Evening Saturday 10 February 2024
2024 Mersea Lions Club Cheque Presentation Evening
On Saturday 10 February 2024 we welcomed guests and representatives of the charities and deserving causes to join us and accept cheques from funds raised by the Mersea Lions Club last year.
We are involved in lots of activities throughout the year with the help of our S.M.I.L.E.s to raise funds and include:
- The Lions Family Festival
- Accepting donations at the gate, and a stall, at a Waldegraves Car Boot Sale
- Donations for parking cars for the Artisan Markets
- Our own table at the Mersea Island Yard Sales
- Car-parking for the Colchester and District Scooter Rally
- The Christmas street collection for the Home-alone Christmas Day meals
- Monies raised by letting out our Beach-hut which is available for use in the community
- Donations from the users of the two Lions mini-buses
- Monies received from our ink cartridge recycling bins.
- Our wonderful friends at Clacton Lions Club for selling our used designer spectacle cases for us
The total amount given to charities and deserving causes during the past 12 months is just under £10,000
In addition to the cheques handed out on the presentation evening, donations were made to clubs and individuals who had asked for financial help during the year.
Here are just some of the ways we served the community in 2023
- Hosting a Coronation Party for senior residents
- Managing the road closure for the Remembrance Day Service
- Christmas Day Home-Alone Christmas Meals
- Donation to Children in Need
- Donation to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
On the evening cheques were presented to:
- Essex & Herts Air Ambulance
- Mersea Island First Responders
- District Governors Wife’s Charity – Cardiomyopathy UK
- Mersea Island RNLI
- Mersea Explorer Scouts
- West Mersea Free Church
- Camp Jo Jo
- S.O.S. Bus (donation to purchase bleed kits)
- Colchester Hospital Children’s Ward
- Children’s Air Ambulance
- Colchester Hospital Cancer Wellbeing Trust
- Medical Detection Dogs
- Refresh Mersea
- Mersea 1st Brownies
We have so many people to thank for helping with our fundraising efforts throughout the year. Some help out at our events and there are others who are constantly working behind the scenes for us. Not forgetting the support we receive to help run the community buses and community beach hut. We are a small club and without them none of the above would be possible.
And, last but by no means least, we are very grateful for the continued support from Waldegraves. David Lord for generously providing the venue for the presentation evening and other events during the year. Krystal, Glen, Head Chef John, and their staff, for organising the food, bar and making the evening such a great success.
Also, thank you to Waldegraves for presenting US with a cheque for £500 to start off our 2024 fund raising.
